23. Define Rogers’ actualizing tendency.
Carl Rogers believed that all people are basically good and born with everything they need to be self actualized. If they grow up in an environment that promotes growth they will reach growth and fulfillment. He believed that this type of environment required three conditions; genuineness, acceptance, and empathy. He believed that these things were like vital nutrients were to a plant. He felt that without them full actualization could never happen. He explained these three as follows.
• Genuineness was measured by the ability to be open with your own feelings. You could think freely and act freely without fear.
• Acceptance was measured by the level of unconditional regard we have around us. Do people allow us to be ourselves with out any pretense? Can we speak freely without fear of judgement? In an environment of true acceptance both answers would be yes.
• Empathy was the degree in which people in our circle relate to and identify with the way we feel.
Carl Roger’s believed that when raised in this type of environment a person is able to focus more on internal thoughts, feelings, and realizations. This allowed them to reach a point of self actualization sooner and more completely than those not nurtured in this environment.
