13.Define learning.
On page 276 of the textbook learning is defined as “The process of acquiring new and relatively enduring information or behaviors”. Typically human beings learn in three ways: classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and cognitive learning.
In classical conditioning we associate one stimuli to an event. For instance every night my mom would say to pick up our toys and we knew after a period of time that after we did this we would be going to bed. So the stimuli of mom saying, “Pick up your toys” always led to going to bed.
Operant conditioning is associating our response to a consequence. This would be learning to repeat things that gave a positive result and avoid doing things that gave a negative result. I learned that studying hard helped me get better grades on tests. I also learned that staying up late the night before a big exam led to feeling tired and not remembering things during it.
Cognitive learning is using our mental information to guide our behavior. This basically means that we can watch other people and learn from there successes or mistakes.
Artifact #1
Classical conditioning: When we see lightning we know to anticipate the loud boom that follows.
Artifact #2
Operant conditioning: When a baby cries the mother comes and picks her up and feeds her. The baby learns that if she cries she will be fed.
