18. Identify and describe positive and negative reinforcement, positive and negative punishment, the different schedules of reinforcement, discriminative stimuli, and shaping.
Positive reinforcement improves behaviors by showing positive reinforcers. They show how a response if a there is a positive reinforcement there is a pleasurable stimulus after a response. This adds a desirable stimulus. A negative reinforcement increases some type of behavior to stop a negative reinforcement. This helps to strengthen a response by taking away a negative action. This would be when you take away an aversive stimulus.
Positive and negative punishment is way to change a certain behavior. By giving a positive punishment someone will do an action to another person or things averse a stimulus. Such as by spraying water on a dog that keeps barking. When you give a negative punishment you are doing a punishment while withdrawing a rewarding stimulus. An example of this would be taking away a teen’s driving rights for doing something wrong.
Each response has a certain time for it to occur. Fixed- ratio schedules are when a response is reinforced after repeating a response numeral amounts of time. Variable- ration schedules provide reinforcement after an unaccountable number of responses. Fixed- interval a first response after a certain time period. Variable- interval schedules reinforce the first response after differing time amounts.
Discriminative stimulus is a signals that a response will be reinforced.
Shaping is when you guide someone closer and closer to toward a behavior that is desired.
